Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world -- the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does -- comes not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever. 1 John 2:15-17 NIV
My hometown has a great newspaper. It is nicknamed "Egypt's Greatest Daily." When I was growing up, my parents always had a subscription and reading the newspaper was something my parents did every day. It was a notable event to get your name or, better still, your picture in the paper. Then everyone would know what a great job you did or how special you were.
Jesus came to give us full lives. But there is no place in it for boasting. Everything good that we have, are and do comes from God. When we compare ourselves to others, our focus is not on God; but, on ourselves. Impressing others may last for a little while; but, doing God's will lasts forever.
